Droppin' some knowledge...

While perusing one of my favorite blogs this morning (Pop Candy) and reading my favorite daily post, The Early Buzz (a round-up of pop culture-related links), I stumbled upon this: "12 Oscar Contenders to Watch for" - just a little something to whet your appetite for the fall and the eventual awards season.

One movie not mentioned (I guess because it's not making the festival circuit) is Warrior. To me it seems like this year's The Wrestler or The Fighter. It stars Tom Hardy (who you'll remember from Inception and will also be taking a turn as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) and Joel Edgerton (the best character in Animal Kingdom) as brothers who end up MMA-fighting each other. Nick Nolte stars as their father. I think it looks good.

Otherwise, I haven't been to the movies in about a hundred years. The husband and I did go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 and people (person?), let me tell you - it is good. It's beautiful and so respectful of the world J.K. Rowling created over 7-ish books. I really recommend it if you love Harry Potter. Totally excellent ending.

So what's the plan going forward now that I appear to never go to the movies ever? Well, hopefully to see one over the long weekend, even if it's some good, long weekend fluff.

What are you planning to see next?

TRAILERS
So I will have to disagree a little on WARRIOR, which is odd because I like all the actors and I watch MMA. However, after seeing the trailer, I have two problems:

1. They have told me the entire story: Family on the rocks, two brothers (also MMA fighters) struggle in a Las Vegas tournament, they end up fighting each other in the finals, and one of them wins. The only thing I don't know is which one actually wins.

2. It's a Disney movie, which I feel will make the movie a little too "happy" and "carefree" than the story deserves. For instance, I think Disney will have all of the characters sail off into the sunset with all grins at the end of the movie.

Nonetheless, I will probably still watch it so I can see Nick Nolte nail the role of himself. I'm fairly certain that in the script there are times where it said, "Nolte: (Waves hands abruptly and screams something unintelligible in a raspy voice)".

So I haven't commented in a while, and I apologize if I am overstepping by writing too much here:

I also saw HARRY POTTER DH P2, and I enjoyed it. However, I should say that I have not read any of the books nor had not seen any of the movies until 2 weeks ago. I just decided to watch the entire series over the course of a week, culminating with the last one in theatres -- amazingly satisfying. Watching them stretched over the course of a decade would have made me a complete nerd.

Lastly, how about the new trailers for FOOTLOOSE and BATTLESHIP? The former looks so bad that I cannot believe it was made. It's hard to believe that in 2011 a town could get away with outlawing dancing . . . Quote from trailer: "You want your cheap thrills (read: dancing)? You can do it OUTSIDE of Beaumont." I found it difficult to watch this trailer without laughing.

And as for the latter (BATTLESHIP), I cannot believe that something so devoid of storyline, integrity, rational thought, and passion for filmmaking was given 200 million dollars. That's right, $200 million. One more time, 200 million dollars. I feel like I just found someone who has been sitting on a bunch of money and could help reduce the national debt: Universal Pictures.

RECENTLY WATCHED
For those of you with Netflix streaming, I recently watched a movie called HARRISON'S FLOWERS (2000) starring Andie MacDowell, Adrien Brody, and Michael Strathairn. Very solid. It is about a photojournalist (Strathairn) who goes over to cover the Croatia/Bosnia conflict in the early nineties and is pronounced dead. But his wife (MacDowell) goes looking for him anyways. Great acting (all around), good cinematography, moves at a decent pace, a few tense action sequences . . . like I said, solid. Plus, this is Brody pre-oscar and includes an appearance by a young Gerard Butler. Everyone's performance is solid -- watch Andie Macdowell's roller coaster of emotions. Raw portrayal of the power of love. I recommend this movie.

In conclusion, I hope that I am wrong on all of the above negative comments. I make a lot of judgements based on trailers because I watch so many of them. For instance, I thought RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES looked awful, but Rotten Tomatoes disagrees with me.

On my radar for movies to see:
1. Martha Marcy May Marlene
2. Ides of March
3. Blackthorn

I mentioned Nick Nolte in this post just for you, thanks for picking up on it!

So I guess I was completely wrong about WARRIOR. It gets a high rating on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I can't say I am not happy. I was hoping someone would make a good MMA flick sooner or later. NEVER BACK DOWN was remarkably bad.

Also, DRIVE is getting surprisingly good reviews. I guess I will need to check that out as well.

Yeah, I've noticed that about DRIVE as well. I like Ryan Gosling, but it just doesn't look that good to me for some reason.
